Sloan Fairchild has spent her life feeling second-rate. Her parents are so involved in each other and their careers as Egyptologists that they barely acknowledge Sloan's existence expect as a glorified assistant. Her fiancé made no secret of the fact that he found her staid and boring, and left her behind without a glance when he found someone better. Alicia is a good friend to her, but Sloan has always felt she paled into insignificance compared to the beautiful and vivacious woman. Recently, Sloan has made changes to her boring life, chucking her job to turn the San Francisco Victorian she inherited into a B&B. It's hard work and Sloan is barely eking by, but she's enjoying her new life nonetheless.

Even more dramatic changes are in store for Sloan when she agrees to take in Alicia's fiancé for a month while he finishes work on his latest novel. Carter Madison was best friends with Alicia's late husband, and he has decided to take responsibility for Alicia and her two young sons. He is thrown into turmoil upon his first meeting with Sloan, and feels a spark he's never felt with any woman, including Alicia--and it's a feeling Sloan reluctantly shares. While they cannot deny their attraction for each other, they both know that their relationship has no future. Carter has made a commitment to Alicia and the boys and can't destroy their lives in order to be with Sloan.

I had a number of problems with this story, including the following:
--There was a lot of cheating and betrayal of trust going on here.
--That said, Carter's act of self-sacrifice just seemed a bit much for me. I'm just not sure why Carter felt the need to step into his dead friend's shoes. Alicia was not hurting financially, so the whole setup seemed overly contrived to me. (But, once everyone made that commitment, they should have stuck to it.)
--I'm not sure I even liked any of the main characters. Sloan's constant self-effacement was annoying, Carter's moods were offputting, and Alicia was flighty and inconstant.

BREAKFAST IN BED was initially published in 1983 and, while it isn't an utterly terrible book, it hasn't held up well under the test of time. Its biggest sin is that it is ultimately boring. There are so many better books out there--including some by this author--that I'm not sure that it's worth the investment of readers' time and money except for fans of Sandra Brown interested in getting a taste of her early work.

(Note: Alicia's story can be found in SEND NO FLOWERS.)

Breakfast in Bed Bed Breakfast Sandra Brown 9780553590180 Books Reviews

"Breakfast in Bed" is very special; because to me, the way these relationships always end up is in misery and all those bad feelings.
Sloan Fairchild is the owner of this elegant bed-and-breakfast inn, and it's called Fairchild House. Sloan focuses all her energy into Fairchild House and in a way Fairchild House is her sanctuary from the outside world, because in the outside world, Sloan has been hurt too many times and she's sort of hiding from it. Sloan promises her best friend, Alicia to let Alicia's fiancé live in Fairchild House for a month. It was a big mistake... because as soon as Sloan opened that door to let Carter Madison into that house, Alicia's fiancé, there was instant sexual tension.
Carter Madison came to Fairchild House, to work on the last chapter of his book. What he didn't expect was to feel the passion and desire for his fiancée's best friend.
Sloan and Carter try to ignore the mutual passion and desire, because of Alicia, but it's very hard. The time comes when Carter ahs to leave, to marry Alicia, but would Carter be able to leave and fulfill his wedding vows to Alicia?
I love this book because of the strong will power Carter and Sloan shows, to restrain themselves of their passion and desire. I think it's really magical and it's really good. I stayed up until very late to finish "Breakfast in Bed" and it was worth it.
Sloane Fairchild has been hurt many times in her life, and has locked her feelings deep inside her, pouring all her energies into opening a bed-and-breakfast inn near San Francisco. Everything she is as a woman is channeled into the inn, which she perfects down to the last detail.
All is going perfectly. Sloane is able to successfully deny her more sensual needs, and take pleasure in her growing business. Until an incredible guest shows up--a man who literally takes her breath away, fight it as she will. Carter turns out to be a best-selling author who needs a hideaway to escape his hectic life and meet the looming deadline for his next book. Sloane is viscerally attracted to him, but fiercely fights it down. Not only is she afraid of involvement, this man is strictly off limits. He is her best friend's fiance.
As the attraction between Sloane and Carter grows despite their best efforts, so does their guilt. Carter is not a lothario, but he is engaged for all the wrong reasons his fiancee and her two small children have been left behind by the death of his best friend. Lending support and assistance, he found himself offering more. Now that he has met Sloane, he sees the error he has made, but it is too late. He feels he must honor his commitment.
Sloane, now desperately in love, feels the same, and it is almost unbearable. When the two finally make love, having lost their battle to stay apart, the reader is torn as well. Obviously, Sloane and Carter belong together, but is that fair?
The reader is kept on tenterhooks until almost the last page, and the ending is not predictable. This is a lovely romance, one with a conscience, and I recommend it highly.
Sandra Brown writes another great novel. It never drags although it is a little predictable it is still a good escape.
Great product, Reasonable price. Prompt delivery.
The book was very good and I would recommed this book to my friends. Sandra Brown is a good writer and story teller and I will continue reading her books
Enjoyed the book. Brown's books as always mysterious. Can't wait to find out the outcome.
This author was recommended to me. Within the first 10 minutes I knew this was not my kind of book. Too much sexual
Content for my taste.
