Scandal A Novel Amanda Quick 9780553289329 Books Reviews
I am a big fan of Amanda Quick. I practically own all of her books, and I am slowly buying them as multiple formats Audiobooks, ebooks, and either paperback or hardcover print copies. My favorite Amanda Quick novels are her earliest ones, such as Desire, Dangerous, or Seduction. Scandal is another favorite. I really enjoy Emily and Simon's unique story.
Emily is a more likeable character than Simon, who was always a little rough around the edges for me. I keep reminding myself that he is a dragon, and dragons are impenetrable. Yet, Emily finds a way through his tough skin to touch his very heart and soul.
The book touches on issues of gambling and suicide. I was frustrated that not all the supporting characters understand that gambling is a truly devastating addiction that affects many. It is true, though, that you cannot help those who refuse to admit they have a problem. Emily and Simon save who they can and, in the process, bring their families closer together to heal past hurts and sins.
Anne Flosnik narrated the audible version of the book. I seek her readings of Amanda Quick's novels first because she captures the voices and emotions the best.
Even with some slightly deeper and darker topics, such as the gambling addiction and suicide, the book is a lighthearted romance. If you seek a fun read with a happy ending, this is the book for you.
I wasn’t sure from the capsule review on whether this was a straight romance, a la Heyer, or an alternate-Regency fantasy like Kowal’s; the male lead is described as “a dragon” and the female as “an elf,” but as it turns out that’s just what they call each other and they’re entirely normal humans. It’s a reasonably decent Regency romance, though with a lot more fairly explicit sex than Heyer or Austen ever came close to using. All within a marriage, though, so not a bodice-ripper. Emily Faringdon is the daughter of a wealthy gentleman (untitled), but has spent much of her life managing the family investments, for which she has a remarkable talent, so that her feckless father and brothers can afford their extravagant (especially high-stakes gambling) lifestyle. Then the mysterious Earl of Blade comes to the neighborhood, and in short order we learn that the senior Faringdon had won his childhood home from his father in a card game (he suspects by cheating). Blade’s father had killed himself in the aftermath, after which Blade and his mother were thrown onto the charity of an aunt. His mother went into a decline and died fairly shortly, but his aunt arranged for Blade to be sent to the East Indies, where he had prospered greatly and eventually returned to Britain, having sworn to take a terrible revenge on all Faringdons, not to mention several former friends of his father who’d refused to help him after his father’s death. I enjoyed it more than most non-Heyer/Austen Regencies I’ve read, so if I get in the mood for more I’ll keep Quick in mind (she’s written a lot), though I doubt I’ll get too many of them.
One of my top 10% love stories of all time. I loved this book by Amanda Quick. I actually believe this is her most sensual love story as well. A must read!!!

Hero is out for revenge on the men that destroyed his family. However, this hero is methodical and has a lot of patience in seeking his revenge. He has developed a clever plan on how to destroy the very man that started the down fall of his family and blames for his father's suicide. The key was the heroine.
The heroine was sweet, intelligent, naïve and a romantic. She is a famous blue stocking heroine that Amanda Quick is so well know for writing. She protects those she loves. Unfortunately, she is taken advantage of by the very men that should be protecting her. She has a skill that keeps her loved well cared for but she is lonely and neglected. She is hidden away and closed off from society, except for the friends she has made in her quaint small village. What I admire most from the heroine is that she sought adventure and has found method of coping that is similar to mine. We are daydreamers. We love to fantasize and romanticize things around us. Why? Because the reality would be much more painful.
So the story starts with the hero and heroine meeting, but not by chance. Hero sets out to seduce and use the heroine romantic nature against her. He thinks he is being slick. But what he does not know is that the heroine is smarter than he thinks. She has been in similar situation before and believe me she quickly woke up from her daydreaming before it went to far. The way the hero handles the situation is really funny. Sorry I digress. As I was saying, the heroine knows she is in love before the heroine does and goes about letting hero sweep her off her feet. The hero thinks he is being smart about it all.
What the hero does not plan and struggles to cope with is love. He doesn't see it for what it is at first. I enjoyed the humor of the dialogue and quick-wit of the situation. I especially enjoyed how the heroine stood her ground and fought for what she believed is right. She was no push over. She pushed for what she deserved but was quick to placate the hero when needed. She was very witty and wise in how she handled the hero. She got her way at the end and was quick to realize what the hero didn't, she could get him to do almost anything for her. There is a scene in the book where she makes hero aware of it because he wanted to get her book published. She was quick to turn him down and let him know she was on to his ruthless ways but she was also determined to do things on her own.
I especially love how the hoer never turns his back on the heroine, nor does he reject her ever. Through their disagreements and fights he is by her side and protective of her. He is quick to squash anyone that stands in the way or attempts to take her from him. He is there the whole time, protective and caring. He spoils heroine to no end. He loves her eccentric ways. He even encourages her to do the things she loves; write. He will do anything for her.
But do not under estimate him. He is ruthless, demanding, dominant, and feared by many. He has had to learn things that scare polite society. Women are rumored to have fainted in his presence. Men do well to stay away from him and his wrath. Those that he seeks revenge from are in constant edge on what he plans to do to them. Everyone believes that nobody can break him from his chosen path, but nobody took into account the heroine either.
This is such as beautiful love story. It is a safe read. Has some erotic elements and in my opinion the hottest sexual story by Ms. Amanda Quick to date. I think she did it to empathized the hero's exotic qualities he learned in the indies; where he regained his riches. This is a safe read. There is no OW or OM. They are loyal to each other. Hero was heroine's first. I loved it then when I read it and I love it now when I re read it. I highly recommend this read to any historical romance readers.
