Weight Of Night C L Stegall 9781456575854 Books
**Spoiler Alert**The Weight of Night is CL Stegall's impressive first offering in what will become the Progeny Trilogy. Although written for a young adult audience this contemporary version of Greek mythology will certainly appeal to adults as well. With that being said this is a novel that has a bit of a slow start but once you get past the slow start the read is absolutely worth the wait!
Eighteen-year-old Alexis Rain lives a charmed life: she's been accepted to Oxford, she drives a BMW, has two parents who adore her and, a best friend, Keats, who is her absolute other half. Here's the rub: Alexis Rain isn't a normal teenager but is, in fact, the daughter of Nyx, the Greek goddess of Night; she kind of didn't know about that. Along with her newly discovered paternity, Alexis also notices that she glows when experiencing extreme emotion, she can teleport, and she knows any and every bit of information that has ever been written or spoken. Sweet!! Super-powers rock!!
Or not. Turns out, Alexis isn't the only child of the Greek deities but one of many that are spread across the globe. Smallish side note: most of the other kids are bat-crap crazy and lethal. Alexis is forced to track down these demigods, befriending some and fighting others, in order to find out who killed her father and just as importantly, who kidnapped Keats. This portion of the novel and right on through to the end is where the action and drama really kick into high gear and it is fun and fast-paced. As a character, this is where we really see Alexis begin to develop; she is smart, cunning, lethally skilled, and wonderfully sarcastic.
As Alexis comes to the completion of her task she begins to understand and embrace not only her true nature but the nature of the demigods as well. She gets to meet her mother as well as another deity or two and to top it all off, Alexis also discovers that the person behind the killing and kidnapping are just pawns in a much, much larger game. What that means for us dear reader is this: there will be more books to come!!
The bottom line: just suck it up and get through the slow start because the middle and ending are well worth the beginning. Alexis is a fine, strong female that is wonderfully balanced by her best friend, Keats. I LOVE Keats! Keats is calm, cool, collected, intelligent, funny, and hot. I also love the fact that Greek mythology is making its way back into mainstream reading markets. Greek mythology is fun, devious, naughty, complicated, and flat out fascinating. Stegall's re-invention or re-imagining of the old myths is a great new trend that I truly hope continues.

Weight Of Night C L Stegall 9781456575854 Books Reviews
I'm not one who usually reviews products. I go over other reviews, and form my opinion based on those, but I don't usually do this myself. But with this book, I felt like I had to.
I was first inclined to think of this as a Percy Jackson-esque book, but I was quickly disabused of that notion. The Weight of Night stands way out in the crowd, from the character style (more human, with flaws, problems, and nothing easily laid out before them), to the Greek Gods themselves (also more lifelike).
This is the kind of book that, no matter that it isn't one's main genre of choice, you can't help but instantly get into. The character development is phenomenal. Each and every step of the way, you grow with the characters. Every bit of emotion, you feel as if you were the character yourself. The friendships, the hardships, the pain, the joy. Every single bit, the author makes you feel. Then there's the antagonists, and support characters, many of them Gods or demigods themselves. And they aren't your usual Gods - Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, etc. - they're ones I am unfamiliar with. God of Envy, God of Night, God of the Sun (which I actually did know about, but only in side references). Many new deities that aren't in the usual classroom doctrine.
The settings in this place are very well developed, to the point that you can see yourself in each of them. Every venue this journey takes you to, you see. And you enjoy seeing them, because it takes you places that you (most likely) have never been. And if any of you say you've been admitted into a psyche ward, then you maybe should go back there, lol.
The overall plotline was very well laid out. Nothing too drastic, with options going either way. You can't help but wonder, at each of the crossroads, how you would react and choose. I honestly don't know how I would have reacted to the Fates myself, but that's just me. And the constant flow, neither jerky or completely out of left field, makes it quite easy to follow. Each scene takes you from beginning to end, then transitions almost seamlessly into the next.
All in all, this book kept me reading it almost non-stop until the end, and I was somewhat sad that there wasn't a sequel ready already. I cannot wait for the next one.
I have to stress how absolutely great this book was. Written by an independent author, I felt like I was reading something I just bought right off the best-seller shelves at Barnes & Noble. The writing style is amazing clean, quick, crisp, believable and polished.
THE WEIGHT OF NIGHT tells the story of eighteen-year-old Alexis, who finds out something extraordinary about herself, which leads her on a dangerous journey to find a killer amidst the sudden death of her mother and of someone else very close to her.
Enter gods, demigods and deities!
As if it couldn't get any better! But this book doesn't simply touch on Ancient Greek Mythology, no; it involves an entire cast of characters. The way Stegall played these characters out was not only mandatorily familiar so that those of us already acquainted with Greek Gods can relate, but also entirely unique at the same time. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I was thoroughly impressed with the whole idea of The Progeny. It was very well thought out and Stegall so easily pulled it off as if he does this sort of difficult thing every day.
And I absolutely loved Alexis' `best friend', Keats, and found myself through most of the book crossing my fingers and hoping they would finally `lurv' each other! I won't give that away either. I'm only bringing it up to describe how well Stegall wrote the relationship between Alexis and Keats. It's just one of those stories when you can't help but root for them in the sidelines, biting your lip out of prolonged unrest.
Anyway, I LOVED this book and I will DEFINITELY be reading future installments.
