The content and the title of this book just don't stick! The authors put together craft projects for each chapter referencing their preferred adhesive. There's no useful chart or listing of the variety of glues and adhesives available on the market that may compare things like surfaces, temperatures, cure time, etc. This book is mostly text that you have to weed through and is not really useful for the individual looking for a "Complete Guide."

The Complete Guide to Glues and Adhesives Nancy Ward Tammy Young 9780873418201 Books Reviews

I am the happy owner of Nancy Ward's new book,The Complete Guide To Glues & Adhesives. As you can probably imagine, it tells everything that there ever was to tell about glues and adhesives. Nancy always knows exactly the right solution to solve any problem with stamping or crafting, and can explain it so easily. She put all of her practical knowledge and loads of research about glues into this book, and it still has her easily understandable approach. It is a loaded with information that is important to everyone who uses glues and adhesives. It is also loaded with some pretty great projects, and instructions. This book is a fabulous resource, and one that I know I will refer to often. I think you'll be impressed with the knowledge and scope that Nancy offers in this book.
Woodworking is not all about "Titebond II," contact cement, and 5-mintue epoxy. Most of us woodworkers do not even know how and when to use them correctly. If your creative (I wish I were) there are times when art forms and mediums intersect. "The Complete Guide..." written by Ms's. Young and Ward, IS the book needed to handle this "event." Using the advice and guidelines in this book, I have been able to incorporate some very beautiful designs in box making.
This book is totally mistitled -- it describes a number of craft projects that use adhesives that were used decades ago. It gives no systematic description of various adhesives, what is good for what surfaces, strength, temperature ranges, etc. Most of its info is totally out of date as of 2010 -- minimal discussion of epoxies, polyurethanes, and none about cyanoacrylate, silanes (strong silicone derivatives), newer polyvinyl types (Titebond III). Might have limited value for hobby crafters, but less than useless for serious maintenance purposes -- people who need and use glues for building and repairing things.
This is a wonderful reference book for glue use. Very valuable information plus a group of projects to try. Very pleased with purchase which arrived quickly in perfect condition.
This book is quite complete and comprehensive. It nicely avoids the name brands and asks of the reader to look at the ingredients. Smart.
I ordered this book after a student brought a copy to the collage class I teach at a local community college. I was taken aback by the cover photos which feature some fairly dreadful "loving hands at home" crafts as do many of the projects sprinkled throughout the text. BUT, the chapter by chapter information on specific types of glues and adhesives is thorough, extremely practical and makes this book a keeper. Clearly written. Lots of specific name brand citations, application hints, and references to producer's websites. I only wish that there were a new edition.
As one with a strong chemical background; museum/fossil conservator (using and testing a multitude of acrylics, acryloids, butvars, animal & wood glues, cyanoacrylates/superglues, etc.); and crafter (multi media - metals, rocks/minerals, fabric, paper, acrylics, oils, colored pencils, molding and casting, jewelry making and so much more), books like these cover only the basics. It is imperative for all to do their OWN tests on products that can be tossed if the "experiment" doesn't work out. Test FIRST, then apply where appropriate. If you have access to the latest publications on adhesives/coatings/glues, I believe it is important to learn from the scientists who actually developed many of these adhesives/coatings, yet note that if one doesn't try "new" or "different" products on specific applications, one may never know if that product is really the best. I've seen products used for different applications and work - surprise. Yet others haved failed, in fact many adhesives fail over time, yellow over time, crack, become brittle, cause over fusing between the glue and product where the glue was applied, AND cause health problems. So know your products used in your work. Try to get MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) information for your products in your "arsenal" (I have a huge tool kit full of various products). And remember, using one product or just a few for all your work is not smart - use the best product for the job and if it poses a health concern, protect yourself. Learn as much as you can - information provides power and a satisfactory product (artwork or other project you may be involved in). Wish this book (and its sister book) could have been more explicit on these suggestions I have provided. Yet for the beginning crafter, it is a good place to start.
